Coleus
I was mesmerized by a large coleus plant’s broad leaves and bright color at the Botanical Gardens in Manito Park, Spokane. I chose a bird’s-eye view, looking straight down, to capture the plant’s radiating symmetry: deep burgundy leaves edged in bright green and white, set against a mosaic of fractured color and leaf-shapes below.
An abstract piece, this was one of my first large-format paintings.
